LUNAWOOD
THERMOWOOD
The popularity of building with wood has increased and continues to grow. Lunawood serves the needs of architects and builders around the globe. The Lunawood collection offers various alternatives for creating modern wooden surfaces. All of the products can be used indoors or outdoors, in any climate.
Dimensional stabilityLowered equilibrium moisture content of Thermowood makes it dimensionally stable and the material retains its shape far better than untreated wood. Non toxic
Thermowood is produced using only natural methods, heat and steam. Lunawood products are completely natural and free of chemical additives.
Resin freeResin is removed from the wood during the thermal modification process. As a result, the wood does not secrete resin even in high temperatures.
All climatesThermowood does not react to changes in temperature or humidity as drastically as untreated wood. Material is proven to work well in different climates. Weather endurance As a result of thermal modification, Finnish types of woods are transformed into durable, weather endurance building material. LunaThermo-D has decay resistance class 2.
Thermal insulationTests have shown that the thermal conductivity of Thermowood is reduced by around 20-25% compared to untreated coniferous wood.
Thermowood production process
Even the ancient Vikings used burnt wooden pillars in the construction of their fortifications because they were much more durable than wood fences that were not processed in any way. The study of the properties of thermowood and the advantages of its use began in the 1930s in the USA and Europe, but at that time the process of production of this material did not reach an industrial scale. Only decades later, the VTT Technical Research Institute of Finland became interested in this idea again. In the result there followed the development of new technology for heat treatment of wood, obtaining a patent and launching the ThermoWood® brand in the late 1990s in Finland.
In the process of heat treatment of wood Lunawood® only steam and material heating at temperatures from 190 to 212 ºС are used. Heat inside the thermal modification chamber is slowly raised up to a high temperature. The whole process can last as long as 110 hours. When the process is complete, the moisture percentage of the material is around 4–7%. Lowered equilibrium moisture content remarkably enhances the wood’s dimensional stability. Thermowood obtained in this way is completely natural and does not have any chemical additives. The technology of processing raw materials ThermoWood® does not violate the natural characteristics and properties of wood. The patented method is based on a gradual temperature modification of wood when its physical and chemical properties are constantly changing.
ThermoWood® is a registered trademark and it can only be used by companies that are members of the International Heat Treatment Association. Lunawood is one of the founders of this Association. So, the quality of our products is controlled by an external independent party.
Thermowood properties
Improved natural longevityDue to the breakdown of sugar particles (hemicellulose), the thermowood does not contain sufficient nutrient concentrations for mold and fungus (COMO certificate). The resistant thermowood Luna Thermo-D (letter “D” stands for “Durability”) belongs to the second class of resistance to rotting (EN 350-2). Timber lumber and products belonging to the first and second class of resistance to rotting, can be used outdoors without any additional processing.
Non toxic and chemical freeThe Lunawood® thermowood presented, for example, in our Moscow projects, is a beautiful and reliable natural material produced using only natural processing methods: in the production process, only heat and steam are used without the use of any chemicals. During the process of modifying the raw material, steam plays the role of a protective gas, which protects the material from splitting and damage.
Improved thermal insulationThe tests have shown that as a result of the modification, the thermal conductivity of thermowood is reduced by 20-25% compared to untreated materials of various coniferous species. So, the thermowood Lunawood® is the most suitable material for windows and exterior doors, cladding of façades, exterior and interior decoration of saunas and baths.
Resin freeDue to the high temperature of Thermowood treatment process, resin is removed from the wood. As a result, using this material you can be sure that even at high temperatures it will not produce resin.
Thermowood is hypoallergenic and safeDuring the production process all harmful organic compounds and unsafe emissions, which deteriorate the air quality and can cause an allergic reaction, are removed from the thermowood. Studies have shown that in pine thermo-D there are twenty times less emissions and compounds than in untreated pine.
The best raw materialWe primarily use Finnish raw material for our products. It is sorted according to our special and stringent requirements. The high quality of our products is based on a logistic chain which is carefully controlled from the forest to the final product. Together with our suppliers, we select and use only the raw materials that are best suited for our production in terms of type and quality.
